How To Save Time And Money At The Grocery Store

No one particularly likes making the trip to the grocery store. It can be a very stressful errand, and usually ends up in a weighty charge on the credit card. There are a few steps you can follow to help your trip take less time and cost you less money. Sometimes all it takes a little preparation to save time and money.

  • Before you can be as time efficient as possible in the grocery store, you have to learn the layout of your store. Plan a trip to the grocery store when you know you will not be rushed. You may have a few things to pick-up; however, this is not going to be your major trip of the week. I recommend going at an odd time when you know you will miss the grocery store "rush hour." Take the time to walk down each isle, taking note of where the items are located. Every store is different, and even the same chain of stores will vary in set-up. Take along a notebook and jot down what is on each isle, and how the perimeter is set-up. This will help you in your preparation for future trips.

    KEEP A LIST
Have a list handy in the kitchen so that anytime you use the last of a pantry staple, you or your family can jot it down on the list.
      • 3:-
CLEAN out your Refrigerator and Pantry
Before you can know what you need, you need to know what you have. Clean out any old leftovers, expired food, and spoiled items from your fridge and pantry. Take note of the items you had to toss.
      • 4:-
    MAKE A LIST
Begin with the list you keep in your kitchen. Now get out the grocery store layout you made in your initial visit. Think about each and every isle in the store and write down all the things you will need for the week. Organize your list so that the items will be in order as you walk through the store. Pick out any coupons you may need for the trip and put them in an envelope. They will all stay together, and you will be more likely to remember to hand them to the cashier.
Get your free grocery checklist tool in the resource section at the bottom of this eHow.
      • 5:-
    GO TO THE STORE
Once again, always try to plan your trips at an odd time of the day. This will be less stressful for you, and result in shorter lines at the checkout. Take your list and a pencil. By marking off items as you pick them up, you will be sure not to forget anything.

    Saving Money
Coupons are there to save you money. Why throw away free money? You do not even have to buy the Sunday paper in order to collect them. You may have a family member or neighbor who already gets the paper, but doesn't use the coupons. You can also print coupons off the internet, and load coupons onto some grocery store saver cards.
      • 7:-
    SHOP WHOLESALE
Join a wholesale membership club. My family goes to Costco once a month to stock up on things we use daily. Buying paper towels, toilet paper, canned goods, soy milk, and frozen items in bulk can save you a lot of money in the long run. Look for the wholesale club brand and take advantage of coupon books you receive in the mail.

Enjoy your stress free trip to the grocery store and the extra time you will have to relax at home.
